It was especially fun meeting with fans that have been corresponding with us through the months.<br /><br />In other Shushy music news, a major globally-renowned rock star has just finished recording the theme song to our all-new half-hour series, which we are excited to formally announce shortly. The full Shushybye band was on hand for the concert, along with KIDS PLACE LIVE morning personality Kenny Curtis who emcee'd the show (and brought along his wicked brand of humor). For the first time in concert, magnificent Michael North started what is sure to be a concert trend: At the close of The Shushybye Theme Song, Michael had all us musicians stop playing - and had the audience singing the "Oh My My Shushybye" chorus acapella...then he brought back the band to play along while the audience sand for a rousing close. As the songwriter (and the band's rhythm guitar player), it was amazing for me to watch as this all unfolded - I wish I had the words!<br /><br />At the Bronx Zoo, it was Michael, the Shushies, lead guitarist extraordinaire Steve Gregory and me (on rhythm guitar) performing two shows. But the stars really were the audience members - children and adults alike! Both performances brought Shushy fans of all ages, with many of the little ones bringing along their Shushybye dolls. As in Washington DC, many of the audience members sang along with Michael and the music moved virtually all of the children to get up and boogie. By the way, if you've never been to the Bronx Zoo, may I recommend this is something you have to do - it is mindbogglingly beautiful. To play at this very special venue is something we will always remember. Please allow me to begin by sharing excerpts of an email sent by Jill, proud mother of toddler Josh and big brother Eric:<br /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><em>My son Joshua is disabled due to a severe brain bleed which resulted in hydrocephalus and the loss of the majority of the left side of his brain. he has a shunt implanted in his head and runs the length of his body to his abdomen... He doesnt watch tv like all my other kids did except when Shushybye comes on. As soon as he hears the theme music he comes a running!!!! When I watch him dancing and clapping to the music I forget about all of the obstacles he must deal with every single day, the Shushies make him just like any other kid... so his dreamwish would be to see them live in concert!!! Thank you so very much!!!! </em><br /><br />Jill<br /></span><br />Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, March 10), Jill, her wonderful husband Thomas and sons Joshua and Eric visited us here at our Shushybye offices. Michael North was here as Michael and I performed Shushybye music for Joshua who danced along to each song. In addition to observing the joy that was in Josh's face, I couldn't help but be impressed as well by his older brother Eric who watched over him with total protectiveness and love. Mom and Dad are going to have blessing after blessing watching as these boys grow up, with the knowledge that young Eric will always and forever be there for his baby brother.<br /><br />Below is the email I received from Jill following our afternoon together:<br /><br /><em><span style="font-size:85%;">Dear Steve,<br /><br />Just had to send you a message to say how wonderful today was!! You and Michael are most generous and kind. Watching Michael hold Josh while he prayed almost brought me to tears...It doesn't seem like saying "thank you" really expresses what my heart wants to say to you and Michael for making my sons future alot brighter...I truly believe that the characters, music as well as Michael's beautiful voice are directly responsible for giving him as normal a childhood as he could have. I am excited to share that you and your families will soon be seeing them in all-new Shushybye TV shows, DVD’s, live appearances (and even a feature motion picture!).<br /><br />PJ is very cool. In the mornings he’s the radio personality on MOON-FM (the rock station in Shushybye) where he’s known as ‘PJ THE DJ.’ After his morning drive shift, PJ heads over to The Dreamery (the huge Nap Valley-based factory where dreams are made) to join his dream team Stardust and Snore.<br /><br />For those of you who grew up in the 1960’s, you might just recognize Stardust...A hippie girl Shushy who wears paisley shirts and bellbottoms, Stardust likes to hand out flowers to everyone. She is sweet and caring - and makes the most creative dreams imaginable.<br /><br />Then there’s Snore. We at Shushybye have a strong suspicion that preschoolers and early grade children will like Snore a lot. He’s kind of like our family’s golden retriever Oscar – everyone Snore meets is instantly his best friend, and he’s ready to have fun anytime, anywhere and for any reason. He also makes a ‘snore’ sound every time he speaks. It’s kind of endearing.<br /><br />PJ, Stardust and Snore also enjoy Shushybye School, along with their classmates WEARY, DROWSY and BUSHED; CHIPPER and CRANKY; and MOONBEAM, NIGHTLIGHT and BIG MATTRESS (I’ll fill you in on these Shushies later). Working together with Phoenix Pictures - one of the most honored and respected film companies in Hollywood headed up by legendary movie producer Mike Medavoy – "Shushybye: My Newest Best Friend" is well into the scripting stage. The first (I believe) movie musical for preschoolers, it’s about a Shushy boy named P-LOW and a little girl named FRANNIE who discover the meaning of true friendship.<br /><br />I would like you to meet some of the stars: P-LOW (His real name is PILLOW but he got the nickname from the famed Shushybye Doo-Wop group THE SLEEPTONES after hearing him sing), along with CHIPPER and CRANKY, WEARY, DROWSY and BUSHED, SNORE, NIGHTLIGHT and NAPPER are some of students in SHUSHYBYE SCHOOL (the teacher is MISS EVE). Then there's MOONBEAM, STARDUST and BIG MATTRESS, three of the top Dream Designers at the DREAMERY (the huge factory where Shushies make children’s dreams). MOONBEAM wears a mohawk hair-do, STARDUST is kind of a hippie who loves to hand out flowers to everyone and BIG MATTRESS is king size, but nice. Two of my favorites are PJ THE DJ who spins the Bedboard 100 hits on MOON-FM (he also emcees the nightly Pillow Park dances) and SKY BLUE, the radio station’s traffic reporter who calls the action on the busy Starways (often recommending that Shushy drivers take surface clouds to get to their destinations). I also particularly like WENDY WINKS, the head librarian of the Shushybye Central Library. Helping her run the library is her rather large family (there are 40 WINKS in all). Among the coolest achievements of 2009, is that we’ve just signed with the biggest and most acclaimed music management and touring company in preschool. The great company (that reps several of the most distinguished artists in preschool music entertainment) will soon finalize live concert appearances for <em>The Shushybyes</em> (as everyone calls our music band!) in cities across the country through 2010. In addition to performing a number of our Shushybye Dream Band ‘hits,’ we are all excited about debuting three new Shushy songs including “Wake Up Zeez” (a ‘Cars’-inspired rock song),“The Dream Coach Song” and a real rocker entitled “Dream On” (not the Aerosmith song, but a fast and fun rocker nonetheless – I love playing that one on my guitar!).<br /><br />With ‘Wake Up Zeez,’ Shushies SNOOZLES and DOZIE will be asking the children in the audience for their help to wake Zeez up to start the show (parents: bring ear muffs!). The Shushybye King will be joining our awesome Shushybye Dream Band vocalist Michael North to sing “The Dream Coach Song – and transport the entire audience to Shushybye via the King’s Dream Coach (you can see Frank Caruso’s illustrations of the King’s Dream Coach in our first storybook, “Shushybye: Close Your Eyes”). We each have our own reasons for looking forward to the holidays - may you savor each day.<br /><br />For me, the holidays are about family, friends, joy, love, warmth, reflection, charity, hope, renewal and...the Shushybye Dream Band performance at the beautiful Geffen Playhouse. This year we are putting together a concert event not to be missed! Part concert, part musical, all holiday magic and cheer!<br /><br />As many of our friends know, Sky-TV in the UK is bringing Michael North and the Shushybye Dream Band to Liverpool for a series of concerts in this extraordinary city. In addition to performing in a specially-built outdoor bigtop, Michael, the Shushies (and me!) will be holding a concert at the fabled Cavern Club. Now for those of you younger than me (and that's starting to become almost everyone I meet!) the Cavern Club is where it all began for our beloved Beatles. First performing at the Cavern Club in August 1957 as The Quarrymen, John Lennon upset then-owner Alan Sytner when he rocked out with “Don’t Be Cruel” (Sytner frowned on rock and favored country-flavored Skiffle music). The Cavern Club is where Brian Epstein first saw The Beatles performing, in November of 1961. From 1961 to 1963 The Beatles made 292 appearances at the club, with their last occurring on 3 August 1963, a month after the band recorded "She Loves You" and just six months before The Beatles' first trip to the U.S.<br /><br />In addition to working with the Cavern Club, Shushybye has also forged an alliance with the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) which is providing dancers to perform onstage as the main Shushy characters SNOOZLES, DOZIE and ZEEZ. LIPA’s original building housed the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, which was the boyhood school of Sir Paul McCartney. Coming into disrepair in the mid-1980’s following its closure, Sir Paul helped establish the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts which utilizes the building as its headquarters. Officially opened in 1996, LIPA has burgeoned into a world class performing arts higher education institution and offers degree courses in acting, community drama, dance, music, theater and entertainment management, theater design and technology and sound technology. And here with the annual wrap-up is Shushybye correspondent, our own Steve Syatt (that's me):<br /><br />Happy New Year!<br /><br />For Shushybye, 2008 was the year we were delighted to unveil our 16” plush dolls, release two new books (Shushybye: Sleepover Surprise and Shushybye: Where Is Christmas), one new DVD (Shushybye Baby) and one new music CD (Shushybye Dream Band: Close Your Eyes) – all to critical acclaim and prestigious parenting media awards.<br /><br />Most important of all, families throughout the world brought home the Shushybye dolls, music CD's, books, sleepwear and DVD’s to enjoy – and our days have been made joyous by the tremendous amounts of loving emails and calls that came our way. The beautiful theater was filled with fun-loving families as Michael, the Shushybye Dream Band, Snoozles, Dozie and Zeez, Conductor McCloud, the Shushybye King and our surprise special guest (Santa!) had a most wondrous time performing on stage. <br /><br />Many of the families took the time to say hello to Michael and me following the concert and even email us over the past couple of days how the concert brought such joy to their children. It was a major pleasure for all of us to bring the Shushybye music and colorful characters to children and their families. (For me, it is an impossible-to-describe feeling watching people singing the Shushybye songs!!).<br /><br />In addition to expressing my deep gratitude to the Geffen Playhouse family and to our incredible Shushybye musicians, dancers and actors, I want to thank the audience so much for joining us for the concert event, and for their enthusiastic response to our performance. The music (always) comes first, and ‘Oh My My Shushybye” came very quickly afterwards. I dictated the lyrics of each verse to my daughter (then about 7) as she scribbled them down. I actually saved the paper! <br /><br />The point is, after sharing it with my family, I had no idea what would happen to it, how it would be received (or indeed if it ever would be received!). I wrote it a few years before launching Shushybye. <br /><br />Every day I feel so privileged to speak with families throughout the world who take the time to call and share their Shushybye experiences with me (many are identical to moments my wife and I will always treasure when our children were little). <br /><br />Seeing this video is such a gift for me personally – that "Oh My My Shushybye" has touched this precious child, as well as precious children in loving homes everywhere.
